The Pandemic Playlist

Covid-19 hit us here in March 2020, everything closed down and life got even quieter than usual. I opted not to work from home knowing I would never get anything done there so travelled into work each day. On about day five I started to notice something weird was happening with my car playlists.

Music was making me irritated. Everything was making me irritated to be fair, but I couldn’t settle for most songs. They were too slow, or too bouncy, or just awful in some other way. Sometimes I even drove in silence, something unheard of a few months ago, or if I did have music on it had to be cranked right up for me to be able to hear it. I also realised I was listening to some songs over and over and over. Not in any order, just that one song played on a loop on the 10 minute commute to and from work. It started with MCR and Dead, then depending on the mood of the week progressed from there:

“wouldn’t it be great if we were, dead”
“I wanna set the world on fire…watch it all burn down…we can start again…”
“I don’t wanna die…I don’t wanna die…”
“I miss you like hell…where did all my friends go..?”
“Love of mine, someday you will die, But I’ll be close behind and I’ll follow you into the dark”

I’m pretty sure I don’t listen to so many songs ordinarily about death! But strange times call for adapted coping strategies! What were some of yours?
